In January of 2014, just 2 hours after landing in Denmark for a semester abroad, Elizabeth (Liz) Schilling experienced a seizure that led to the diagnosis of a brain tumor in her left temporal lobe. Instead of spending the spring of her junior year in college exploring Europe, Elizabeth traveled to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she underwent a 10-hour, awake craniotomy on Valentine's Day to remove most of the benign tumor. She then spent the next few months recovering at home in North Manchester.
After taking four summer classes, Elizabeth was able to graduate on time with a degree in economics from Denison University, a small liberal arts university located in Granville, Ohio, just 30 minutes east of Columbus. After graduation, she began her position as a Management Associate at Park National Bank in Newark, Ohio.
In the fall of 2015, Elizabeth’s tumor demonstrated a small bit of growth, and she underwent six weeks of proton radiation and over ten months of chemotherapy. For nearly three years, the tumor remained quiet, but this past fall, it began growing rapidly, changing quickly from a stage two, benign tumor to a stage 4 glioblastoma. In addition to the rapidly growing tumor, Elizabeth has a rare disorder called leptomeningeal disease, a condition in which cancer cells make their way through the spinal fluid.
Since January 8, 2020, Elizabeth has been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation to her brain and spine. Despite the seriousness of the cancer, Elizabeth maintains a positive mindset. She continues to remind us to live in the moment and appreciate the lives we are living.
On Friday, February 21st, from 5-8pm, during the boys Maconaquah game, there will be a benefit meal in the cafeteria to support Elizabeth Schilling, a MHS graduate, who is currently battling a brain tumor. The meal can be dine in or carry out for $10. The menu will be pork loin, mashed potatoes, salad, dessert and drink. Tickets are available for pre-sale on Eventbrite, link can be found on Facebook. T-shirts will be available for purchase for $20 at the event and at Rhinestones & Roses. 100% of proceeds will go to Liz's Unexpected Journey Fight! Your support means a lot and we hope to see everyone at the event!
